The Templates page

A template defines the shape of a school day — the order and duration of classes and breaks. Create one template for each distinct daily layout in your school (for example, one for Elementary and another for Middle if they're different).

Quick start

  1. Click + Template and name it.
  2. Under Daily sessions, click + Session to add time blocks.
  3. Edit each session to set type (Classes or Recess), times, and duration.

What is a template?

A template defines the weekly arrangement of classes and recesses used to build individual classroom timetables. Create a separate template for every distinct layout in your school — for example, one for Elementary and another for Middle if their days are structured differently.

A brand-new template starts blank, with no sessions — you add them one by one. When the page is empty you'll see Click '+ Template' to create your first template.

You don't assign templates to grades here. That happens later on the Study Plan page, where each grade is given a template.

Time between classes

At the top of the page is a Time between classes setting. It adds a gap between two class sessions — for instance, so teachers can move from one room to another.

  1. Open the Time between classes dropdown.
  2. Choose 0 min, 5 min, or 10 min. The default is 0 min.

The gap is only inserted between two back-to-back class sessions — not before or after a break.

Creating a template

Add a template for each daily layout you need.

  1. Click + Template at the top of the page.
  2. In the Create New Template dialog, type a name in the Template Name field (for example, "Middle").
  3. Click Create Template, or Cancel to back out.

Template names must be 5–20 characters and unique. The new template appears as a card, ready for you to add its sessions.

The template card at a glance

Each template is a card. From it you can see and shape the whole day.

  1. The template name — click it to rename.
  2. Two totals: Weekly classes and Weekly breaks.
  3. A Show example link — hover it to preview the week (Monday–Friday) laid out.
  4. A delete button for the whole template.
  5. The Daily sessions list with a + Session button.

Building the day: adding sessions

Sessions are the periods that make up a single day, in order from morning to afternoon. Add one for each class and each break.

  1. Under Daily sessions, click + Session.
  2. A new session is added to the end of the day. Each row shows its start time, end time, duration (e.g. 45 min.), and type — Classes or a break.
  3. Keep adding sessions until the day is complete.

Times chain automatically: only the first session has an editable start time. Every following session starts when the previous one ends, so adjusting one session's time or duration shifts the rest. You can also drag a session to reorder it.

Editing a session

Click the pencil on a session row to open the Edit Session dialog, where you set its details.

  1. Choose the Type of session: For Classes or For Recess.
  2. For the first session of the day, set Begins at (the day's start time).
  3. Set Duration (in minutes) — between 5 and 360, in steps of 5.
  4. Click Save, or Cancel.

Turning a session into a break

Breaks like lunch or recess are just sessions set to "For Recess." You can give them a name so they read clearly on the schedule.

  1. Open the session with the pencil to reach Edit Session.
  2. Set Type of session to For Recess.
  3. In Display Text (optional, to show on the schedule), type a name like "Lunch" or "Recess" (up to 20 characters).
  4. Click Save.

If you leave the name blank, the break shows as Unnamed recess until you name it.

Weekly classes & breaks

The two totals on the card — Weekly classes and Weekly breaks — count your sessions across a five-day week. Each daily class session counts as 5 weekly classes, and each daily break counts as 5 weekly breaks.

Example: a day with 3 classes and 1 lunch shows 15 Weekly classes and 5 Weekly breaks.

Deleting a session or template

Delete a session

  1. Open the session with the pencil.
  2. Click Delete in the Edit Session dialog, then confirm.

Delete a template

  1. Click the template's delete button and confirm.

A template can't be deleted while it's assigned to one or more grades — the delete button is disabled and tells you which grades are using it. Remove it from those grades first (on the Study Plan page).

Warnings you may see here

When something on this page needs attention, a warning triangle appears next to Templates in the navigation bar; hover it to see the details (how the triangles work is explained in The warning triangles on the Summary page). In these warnings, a "line" is a session row of a template. The warnings this page can raise:

No For-Classes Lines Critical

There must be at least one template with a for-classes line.

No template has a session of type Classes yet, so there is nowhere to place any class. Create a template and add at least one class session with + Session.

Template without Lines

The Template Middle has no lines.

This template has no sessions, so a grade using it would have an empty day. Build its day with + Session, or delete the template if it isn't needed.
